Siena's Nature Creativity

Siena's Nature Creativity, originally uploaded by islandj.

Is this not the most inspired bit of natural creativity? Chris and Sterling have been playing catch in the street lately, in the evenings, and Siena and Sage play in the bits of front lawns and the greenbelt on the side of the street. I'm not too embarrassed to say that I use this lovely half hour of time to hide myself away in the house, but I am always treated to little bits of information, as they run themselves inside to share, and now these little leaf bouquets. I just love Siena's creativity, using the sharper piece of twig to hold the pretties in place on the large leaf. Her supply is endless, as are the variations of flowers and grass and such that arrive on each one.

We have been focusing on nature study quite a bit lately, enjoying more outside time, taking time to observe what we find more carefully, and generally noticing much more. Our resident hawk (whatever kind he may be, we are still totally uncertain) keeps us much entertained, and also has encouraged us to think of beginning to sketch moving objects. Our small garden has not yet died, and Siena and I continue to sketch its progress every few days. Sage likes to sit beside me and color a coloring page, and Siena sketches away. Sterling, for the most part, seems to find sitting still in any form, or for any purpose but to read, to be onerous, but I will occasionally require him to take a moment to observe something and try to set it to paper. His ability to notice features has improved, if not the actual sketches. Alas, were Siena to try to be athletic like he is, she'd feel the want of her abilities as keenly as he feels the want of artistic talent. How wonderful that they each of a passion of their own!

So lovely! Like the artist herself. They are each so delicate and unique yet pleasingly harmonious. Beautifully done, Siena.

Beautiful! Nature study with a little girl is oh so different, isn't it? We've been having worm races, and raising tadpoles, and rolling logs to see what bugs live underneath... sigh. I guess I'm going to just have to sketch beautiful things on my own...
