Right before Christmas, we had a painting party and celebrated the end of our school unit on birds by decorating these little bird houses. Not knowing what to do with them (oh, the painting is SO very fun, but the storing displaying of so very many fun things is more than this mum knows what to do with), I jumped at Sterling's suggestion that we actually use them as, ahem, birdhouses. Brilliant. I knew I was doing something right in homeschooling these kids. So they filled them up with birdseed and put them on the most obvious place: the picnic table. You know, where people eat. And since we haven't eaten there in awhile, the bird, um, well, you know how birds are, that'll just get washed off someday when the weather is lovely and we want to eat outside again. As we live on a canyon, we are always seeing and hearing from a variety of lovely birds, but with these seed spewing houses in the picture, we are inundated with birds. At one point, nearly 15 mourning doves were on and around this area. Add to them spotted towhees, western scrub jays, finches, mocking birds and lots of others, and we've got ourselves the equivalent of a relatively care free aviary. It's pretty cute, too!
